Gushan Daitian Temple in Kaohsiung has raised NT$60 million to undergo restoration after cracks appeared on the paintings featured on the beams of the temple. Thanks to the support of devoted followers and the temple’s chairman, fundraising was successfully organized, and the temple’s makeover is expected to be completed in 2023.

The temple was built in 1951 and has withstood the test of time for nearly 7 decades. The restoration of Gushan Daitian Temple is part of the “Hamasen Restoration Project” initiated by the Kaohsiung City Government’s Bureau of Cultural Affairs.

The Hamasen Restoration Project has already refurbished cultural highlights, such as the North Gate of Xiong Town, Takao Station, and the Red Cross Center for Children, and more.

Temple officials said that the traditional paintings on the beams showed several cracks while the main area for worshipping has also shown signs of ageing.

The team in charge of the restoration project stressed that the hardest part is to maintain the temple’s traditional look while using the right chemicals to cleanse the structure without altering the temple’s vibrant colors.

|The process is extremely time-consuming but project managers said that understanding the old design and the making traditional decorations make it all worth it. (高市文化局提供|Courtesy of Bureau of Cultural Affairs Kaohsiung City Government)
