CHANGING FACE OF TAIWAN STARTUP SCENE: Female founders grabbing the spotlight

Most of the best-known Taiwanese and Taiwanese-American founders in the startup field over the last decade have been male, including big names like Jerry Yang of Yahoo, Steve Chen of YouTube, Jensen Huang of NVIDIA, Charles and Kai Huang of Guitar Hero, Chihyu Chien of Wretch, and Kevin Lin of Twitch.

Furthermore, conversations around diversity and inclusion have not yet become commonplace in Taiwan as they have in the US and Silicon Valley. However, despite the lack of a unified effort toward gender diversity in the startup ecosystem, there is rising female power within Taiwan’s tech scene, within both startups and incubation/acceleration organizations.

Startup Entrepreneurs

According to data from Taiwan Startup Stadium’s 125-member membership program Starting Lineup, roughly 30% of member companies have at least 1 female founder, and nearly 25% have at least one foreign-born founder. For the 2018 #TaiwanRocks tour to TechCrunch Disrupt SF, the demographics are diverse:

  • Gender breakdown: 50% of the selected startup companies have at least 1 female co-founder, including 3 female CEOs and 1 CTO

  • Nationalities: founders from Taiwan, the United States, and Canada, including 1 recipient of Taiwan’s Entrepreneur Visa (available since 2015)

  • Community backing: Taiwan Startup Stadium, AppWorks, BusinessNext/MEET, STEEP!
