Many tourist attractions in Taiwan have set up bilingual signs in a bid to attract foreign visitors with background information and history highlights.

To the surprise of U.S. backpacker, Asher Leiss, however, there is something wrong with the translation of the tourist sign at Liou Yi Shan Trial

In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Leiss showed how the Chinese portion of the sign introduces basic information of the place; however, the English portion was entirely unrelated to the original Chinese content and Liou Yi Shan, itself.

It later became clear that the translation was copied directly from a website called FanFiction.Net whose advertisement encourages social media users to use their website for instant translations.

Although Leiss has seen many signs with misspellings, grammatical errors and bad English, he had never read a sign where it was so apparent that the person in charge directly copied and pasted text that is unrelated to the original content.

He added that the sign made his day and expressed hope that the government would not take it down as it’s such a funny error.

Social media users immediately commented below his video, writing, “Hahaha, this is too funny; they didn’t even edit it!”, “This is going to become a popular tourist attraction,” and “See, the sign worked! It succeeded in getting your attention!”

To this, the Pingtung Forest District Office, Forestry Bureau also replied, saying “Thank you, Asher Leiss, for pointing this out to us. After we heard of this information, we immediately began correcting and updating it.”

“We’ll be extra careful next time, and hope that you will continue to give us advice in the future,” the District Office added.
