As the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic continues to plague the world, Taiwan’s virus-prevention measures have remained in place, with anyone coming into Taiwan subject to a quarantine of at least 14 days before going back to his or her day-to-day life.

Having recently returned from the States, Charles Liu, a graduate from the Berklee College of Music, has started to write songs inspired by his quarantine experience.

These include ordering food online, getting phone calls from the borough chief, binging Netflix series, as well as calling the 1922 pandemic hotline if one feels sick. His originality has led many fans to praise him for “being very creative”.

The 21-year-old began playing the piano and violin when he was 4. During his sophomore year of high school, Liu received a scholarship of US$30,000 (NTD$898,095) to attend the Berklee College of Music. Liu, who previously joined Golden Melody Award winner David Tao’s (陶喆) company, has released a personal album too.

After three years of hard work at Berklee College of Music, however, Liu’s graduation was suddenly canceled. When his planned flight back to Taiwan in March was also canceled, he had to re-book a ticket on May 19.

According to local media, Liu said his graduation and end-of-the-year ceremony were ultimately changed to online ceremonies which made him feel bittersweet about the ending of his college years.

Liu’s song “1922,” talks about calling the 1922 emergency hotline for further help regarding the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The significance of 1922 came from Liu’s schoolmate who revealed to Liu that the borough chief had told him he was the “only one on that flight that knew about the 1922 emergency hotline.”

After hearing about this, Liu decided to use his music to help spread awareness and to also thank everyone who had put in efforts to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
