Don of the Philippines was amazed at Taiwan upon his first visit. Not only did he go to Taipei 101 and the highest — literally — police station in the nation, but he also visited Shilin Night Market. Follow his footsteps and experience the “Treasure Island” — Taiwan, through his eyes.

對Don來說，台灣最美的地方是阿里山，其中最特別的景點之一是奮起湖，因為Don覺得這個小鎮很有聖誕節的感覺。位在阿里山腳下的奮起湖為海拔一千多公尺的山城，有南台灣九份之稱。它是一個客家聚落，「湖」是客家話中盆地之意，因此當地實際上並無湖泊。奮起湖更是阿里山森林鐵路的中途站，更以鐵路便當、老街和自然景色為名。

For Don, the most beautiful place in Taiwan is Alishan. One of the most special attractions is Fen Qi Hu because he thinks this small town feels like Christmas. A mountainous town, Fen Qi Hu sits at the foot of Alishan, with an altitude of more than 1,000 meters, also known as the southern Jiufen.

The town of Fen Qi Hu is a Hakka settlement. “Hu” in Mandarin means lake but in the Hakka dialect, it means “basin,” which is why there is, in fact, no lake at all.

Fen Qi Hu is a halfway station of the Alishan Forest Railway, and it is also known for its railway bento, old streets, and natural scenery.

此外，紅色車身的阿里山森林鐵路也讓Don印象深刻。森林小火車是阿里山的經典之作，更有鐵路愛好者單純為了火車而來。對Don來說，阿里山最耐人尋味的是它的歷史：令人瞠目結合百年柏樹、日式賓館等等。他不停地告訴自己，若那千年的樹能說話，不知道他們藏了多少秘密。

In addition, the Alishan forest trains that have a red exterior also made an impression on Don. The forest train is a classic of Alishan.

Some railway enthusiasts come purely for the trains. For Don, Alishan’s most intriguing part is its history: the stunning combination of century-old cypress trees and Japanese-style architecture.

He kept telling himself that if those thousand-year-old trees could tell stories, imagine how many secrets they hold.

除了美景，台灣聞名遐邇的還有美食。Don在士林夜市大啖各式小吃，說台灣料理，絕對是來台灣的三大理由之一。整體來說，台灣充滿豐富的歷史文化，同時也洋溢著現代的設計與美感。在台灣所有迷人的事物中，Don最喜歡的是濃濃的台灣味，在古老的建築、寺廟、街道和美食中處處可見。老實說，台灣從來都不是Don的第一選擇，但是經此一遊，他不僅完全不後悔，還一定要再來。

Apart from its natural beauty, Taiwan is also famous for its food. Don had a lot of traditional snacks at Shilin Night Market. He said that Taiwanese cuisine is definitely one of the top three reasons to visit Taiwan.

On the whole, Taiwan is full of rich history and culture, but “dipped in modern taste” of design and beauty. Among all the fascinating things in Taiwan, Don’s favorite is the strong local culture, which is ubiquitous, it can be seen everywhere in ancient buildings, temples, streets and food. To be honest, Taiwan has never been Don’s first choice, but after this trip, not only does he not regret it at all, he said that he must come again.
