Hell Money Thrown Into Air During Taipei's Pension Reform Protest

Hell money was thrown into the air during a rally outside Taipei’s Presidential Office on Sunday, January 22, against proposed reforms to the pension system.

Protesters, including public servants, police, military personnel and teachers, voiced their anger at the plan as a national conference on the form was underway in the Office.

The author of this video said hell money was hurled into the air to wish President Tsai Ing-wen and her Democratic Progressive Party a bad Chinese New Year and bad luck in the coming year.

Vice President Chen Chien-jen last week announced a plan that would postpone a default in payments to retired teachers, civil servants and non-government employees by a decade. Demonstrators, who feared the proposal would ruin their retirement plans, called for the resignation of Tsai, who said reforms are “urgent” due to limited national and social resources.
