President Tsai Ing-wen said on Wednesday that “The Republic of China” is far from being a “meaningless word” in response to a Facebook post made by The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ (MOFA, 外交部) a day earlier.

“We actively participate in numerous diplomatic missions and international activities in the hopes of increasing the international visibility of the ‘Republic of China’, Taiwan,” President Tsai wrote.

The comment comes after MOFA’s Facebook page celebrated the opening of a Taiwan representative office in Somalia on Monday.

In referring to the plaque, “Taiwan Representative Office in the Republic of Somaliland” the post read, “Just ‘Taiwan’ is written on this plaque with no other unnecessary words; so nice~”, leading many to claim that MOFA was referring to the term “Republic of China” as a meaningless term.

In response to media inquiries, MOFA Spokeswoman Joanne Ou (歐江安) said on Wednesday that the MOFA has never meant that the term “Republic of China” is redundant, hoping that the public would refrain from misinterpreting the Facebook post and stop the hype.
