哈利與梅根宣布前述決定前未徵詢王室成員，也未稟告女王、哈利父親王儲查理(Prince Charles)，以及哥哥威廉王子(Prince William)。
資深王室消息人士透露，女王及親屬感到「非常失望」；另一人表示，王室對哈利和梅根的決定「震驚、難過且徹底動怒」。
哈利與梅根去年耶誕節帶著亞契到加拿大度假六周，返英不出數日便投出震撼彈。
白金漢宮聲明表示，「薩塞克斯公爵伉儷的討論仍在非常早期的階段，我們了解他們渴望採取另一種方式，但這是需要時間磋商的複雜議題」。

英國媒體指出，所謂王室「高級」成員指的是正在履行王室成員義務，以及繼承順位排在前面的王室成員，目前英國王室高級成員包括女王、女王夫婿菲利普親王(Prince Philip)、王儲查理和妻子卡蜜拉(Camila)、威廉王子和妻子凱特(Kate Middleton)、繼承順位第六的哈利、梅根，以及女王次子安德魯王子(Prince Andrew)。
哈利與梅根的新網站薩塞克斯王室成員(sussexroyal.com)8日上線，開宗明義寫道：「目標是聚焦連結我們的人事物，而非分化」，說明兩人未來的新方向與運作模式。
新網站的「媒體」項目中寫道，哈利與梅根真摯希望改變媒體政策，讓他們有能力自由地與大眾直接分享訊息。
