蘭嶼因島上盛產蝴蝶蘭而得名，而蘭嶼島上的達悟族（又名雅美族）是臺灣唯一的海洋民族，他們認為拼板舟不僅是捕魚和交通的要工具，更代表達悟族男人身體和靈魂，造船是神聖使命。因此，達悟人小時候就開始種樹，經過幾十年的照護，且木料須從八至九種樹種中慎選，幾經刨製，才能打造出獨一無二的拼板舟。畫中，這對夫妻以捕飛魚為生，他們為了生活，手不停地工作著，拼板舟如影隨行地跟隨著，彷彿也守護著他們，背後映襯旭日東昇的美景，成為我構思此幅畫的焦點。

For Living
Yamei tribesmen of Orchid Island are the only sea fishermen in Taiwan. They consider their boat is not only for fishing and for transportation, but also represents the body and soul of the Yamei men. In the picture, this couple’s profession is fishing flying fish. For their livelihood, they never stop working; their boat always follows them, as if protecting them. Their background is a glorious rising sun. It is the focus of my painting.
