已經啟用了一段時間的中國「天眼」FAST(Five hundred meter Aperture Spherical Telescope)500 米口徑球面射電望遠鏡,很快將迎來新的任務。據科技日報報導,這款全球最大的單面口徑射電望遠鏡將從九月開始搜尋地外文明。它目前正在對後端設備進行升級,在完成改進後 FAST 就能從大量電磁訊號中,篩選出對尋找外星生命有用的窄帶候選訊號。

據介紹,這次升級的設備是由美國加州大學伯克利分校的地外文明研究團隊聯手中國科學院國家天文台共同開發而成。按照參與該計畫的中國地外文明研究專家張同傑的說法,雖然目前捕獲的可疑訊號「還有待進一步甄別」,但這套後端方案「非常有效」,其「高解析度和對宇宙噪音的處理能力非常出色」,而這將能讓「天眼」在地外文明的搜尋上「如虎添翼」。
