The fighting between Israel and Gaza's armed factions comes after Israeli forces stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on May 10 for a third consecutive day, firing rubber-coated steel bullets, stun grenades and tear gas at Palestinian worshippers at Islam's third holiest site in the final days of the holy month of Ramadan.

Tensions have also soared over a now-delayed court ruling relating to the eviction of several Palestinian families from their homes, claimed by Israeli settlers, in the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

At least 35 people have been reported killed since hostilities between Israel and Hamas escalated on May 10. The Gaza health ministry said that 32 Palestinians were killed in Israeli air raids on the coastal territory. Israeli medics said that three people in Israel were killed in rocket attacks.

The International Committee of the Red Cross urged all sides to step back, and reminded them of the requirement in international law to try to avoid civilian casualties.
