Aldis Hodge: Black Adam introduces the OG superhero team: the JSA

In Black Adam, the Justice League are out and the Justice Society – led by Aldis Hodge’s winged warrior, Carter Hall aka Hawkman – are in.

“DC fans know Hawkman has been part of the JSA and the Justice League in the history of the comics”, says Hodge.

“But the thing that I love about this is that we get to introduce the JSA. We get to show the inception of where it all started. Because you know the JSA is the very first superhero team in comic books. We’re the OG’s! And we get to build that up.”

Black Adam is heading to UK cinemas and IMAX on 21 October.

AMON WARMANN: Hawkman now is in the DCU.

ALDIS HODGE: Yeah.

AMON WARMANN: The Justice League is also in the DCU. Are you on a first name basis with Batman, Superman? What's going on there? How does Hawkman fit in? Tell me.

ALDIS HODGE: Hawkman is rebuilding the JSA. You know what I'm saying? I mean, for the DC fans, they know Hawkman has been part of the JSA, and the Justice League, and the history of the comics book. The thing that I love about this is that we get to introduce the JSA. We get to show the inception of where it all started. Because the JSA is the very first superhero team in the existence of [INAUDIBLE]. We are the OGs. And we get to build that up. So for me, I do love that. And for wherever it goes, we'll see who he knows along the way.

AMON WARMANN: Pierce, one of the things I really love about this movie, it's not just good or bad. There's gray. How important is it to interrogate the nature of heroism in a film like this?

PIERCE BROSNAN: Well, heroism comes in many shapes and designs of emotion. So for me, to be a hero, for me to play Kent Nelson, you go to your own kind of strength as a man, as an actor. You try to keep it as simple as possible. Otherwise, you would be overwhelmed by it. And there's so much that is given to you in the text, so much is given to you in the characters that surround you that if you keep it as sincere and as honest as possible for your own emotions and intense.

And of course, in my character, he has a secret. And he knows-- he has a knowledge of who he is and the fate of Hawkman. So that allows you to play-- to kind of pull back a little bit and just let it unfold.

AMON WARMANN: You got a lot of cool gear in this film. Did you keep any of it?

ALDIS HODGE: I tried.

PIERCE BROSNAN: I kept the dressing gown. I kept that beautiful dressing gown.

AMON WARMANN: What did you try to keep, and why were you unsuccessful in your endeavor?

ALDIS HODGE: I tried to keep the helmet.

PIERCE BROSNAN: So did I.

ALDIS HODGE: It wasn't successful because I needed to do reshoots.

PIERCE BROSNAN: Yeah.

ALDIS HODGE: And that was like done. The helmet is ours.

AMON WARMANN: And they may need it for a sequel, just saying.

ALDIS HODGE: They can make another one.
