Auckland Fur Seal Pups Die Despite Care of Zoo
Two orphaned wild fur seal pups were rescued by environmental rangers and treated at Auckland Zoo. Sadly, the zoo’s staff was unable to save the injured animals, the zoo said as it released video on October 25.
Staff said the pups, known as kekeno in Te Reo Maori, had permanent injuries that veterinary care could not cure. They asked members of the public to take care when observing fur seals off the New Zealand coast, and to keep their distance and dispose of rubbish, including fishing equipment, carefully.
