California organizations work to increase Latino voter registration, turnout

There is a strong push across California to get everyone who is an eligible voter to register to vote, and Latino and Hispanic organizations are focusing on encouraging the community to do the same. A Public Policy Institute of California poll from August showed that Latinos are dramatically underrepresented among likely voters. While Latinos make up about 35% of the state’s adult population, they only account for 22% of likely voters. Meanwhile, Whites make up 40% of California’s adult population but 55% of likely voters. Mindy Romero, Director of the Center of Inclusive Democracy, said California has historically had a voting electorate that does not look like the entire population. Romero added that the same outcome will occur this November, despite experts saying overall turnout is expected to surpass other recent midterm elections.
