Debris Sent Flying as Tropical Cyclone Freddy Nears Mauritius

High winds sent debris flying in northwest Mauritius on Monday, February 20, as Tropical Cyclone Freddy passed its closest point to the island before moving on towards Madagascar, the Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS) said.

Footage by Piotr Wachowski shows debris flying through the air at a resort in Pointe aux Biches.

The MMS said Freddy passed its closest point on the island about 120 km north of Grand Bay at 4 pm local time.

The cyclone was forecast to impact Reunion Island between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, according to Meteo-France. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said Freddy was expected to make landfall in Madagascar on Tuesday evening, as a Category 4 storm. Credit: Piotr Wachowski via Storyful
