- Everything you need to know about treating and preventing mold. What is mold? It's a fungus that spores in warm damp environments. Here's a crazy fact, molds can sense which direction they should move in for the best chances of thriving. So before the mold in your home becomes sentient, here's how to treat it.

Vinegar. Dilute one part vinegar to one part water, and spray on affected areas before scrubbing. If you've got mold on your clothing, the best way to treat it is a hot wash, around 60 degrees. This will kill the mold, but it won't remove all the stains. In order to do that, you're going to need to combine 1 teaspoon of baking soda to a Cup of vinegar and add to your washing cycle.

Mold in the bathroom can be really tough to clean. So one tip is to fold off a paper towel and place it over a mold infested area. Pour bleach over the top of the towel and leave for an hour. If you don't want to use such harsh chemicals, thyme and oregano essential oils have been proven to help remove mold and discourage it from growing back in treated areas. Add some to your soapy water to supercharge your cleaning.

Silica gel sachets are really handy. These often come inside of packages and are designed to prevent moisture from damaging a product. Keep them in drawers and shoes to maintain freshness, or pop them alongside tools to prevent rusting. Check your air-con to see if it has dry mode. This is usually represented by a water drop, whereas the cool mode is represented by a snowflake. What dry mode does is instead of blowing out cold air, air is drawn in and any moisture is evaporated. Set your AC to dry mode, and you've got yourself a large-scale dehumidifier.

The best way to prevent mold is general ventilation and airflow. Try to keep windows open when you can. But if you can't because, say, it's pouring down with rain, using a standing or ceiling fan to keep air moving through your home is just as effective.
