Fire Chief Killed as Nebraska Wildfire Grows to Estimated 30,000 Acres

A volunteer fire chief in south-central Nebraska was killed on April 8 as the result of a wildfire that started on Thursday, April 7. The fire had destroyed several homes and businesses and forced evacuations, the state’s forest service said.

Elwood Fire Chief Darren Krull was killed in a vehicle collision amid zero-visibility smoke conditions at the scene of the fire, the Lincoln Journal-Star reported.

These videos taken by Reid Stagemeyer show a large plume of smoke spreading through the sky in south-central Nebraska on Thursday.

According to the Nebraska State Forest Service, several residential and commercial buildings had been destroyed by the fire as of Friday morning.
