Fire and Explosions at Munitions Disposal Site as Heatwave Grips Berlin

A fire spread to at least 15,000 square meters after explosions went off at a munitions disposal site in Berlin’s Grunewald forest on Thursday, August 4, the city’s fire department said.

Footage by Berlin resident Florian Wendelborn shows a plume of smoke and sparks flying. He said the footage was filmed shortly before 6 am from Schmargendorf, a locality on the edge of the forest on the western side of Berlin.

According to DW, firefighting efforts were being hampered due to “the threat of further explosions and flying debris.”

German news agency DPA reported a police spokesperson said the site was used to dispose of ammunition in a controlled environment, and it was unclear how the explosion could have happened.
