Kenyan President William Ruto Sworn in at Packed Inauguration Ceremony

President-elect William Ruto was sworn in as the fifth president of Kenya at a packed Moi International Stadium Kasarani in Nairobi on Tuesday, September 13, amid surging food and fuel prices and high levels of unemployment.

Ruto, who had served as deputy president of Kenya from 2013 to 2022, was elected after Kenyans went to the polls on August 9. His opponent, Raila Odinga, filed a court challenge accusing Ruto of cheating his way to victory, but the Supreme Court opted against taking on the challenge.

The inauguration and swearing-in was livestreamed to Ruto’s Facebook page on Tuesday.

Kenya’s National Police Service said the stadium was filled by 5 am on Tuesday morning and urged members of the public to make alternative arrangements to view the proceedings to “avoid logistical challenges.”

St John Ambulance service subsequently said it was “on high engagement” following a sudden stampede that occurred at the stadium. It released photos showing first responders with people on stretchers outside the venue. Credit: William Samoei Ruto via Storyful
