Marvel’s ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ brings in $143 million in opening weekend

Yahoo Finance entertainment reporter Allie Canal details the box office debut for "Thor: Love and Thunder" and how it stands against other Marvel movie opening weekends and this year's summer blockbusters.

AKIKO FUJITA: "Thor-- Love and Thunder" dominating the box office this past weekend, as theaters continue to celebrate a strong summer blockbuster season. Joining us to break down some of those numbers for us, we've got Yahoo Finance's Allie Canal. Allie, I did not watch the movie. Certainly a big number if you're talking about how much they raked in. But my understanding is it's still not the largest Marvel opening this year, right?

ALLIE CANAL: It's not, Akiko. "Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" actually took that title with a domestic debut of $185 million. But $143 million domestically, that's nothing to be upset about. This is a win on all cylinders when it comes to Marvel, just the hold that it has on the box office. Now, I will say that that number is just shy of industry estimates, which were at around $150 million. Globally, though, that number doubled to more than $300 million. This is also the best showing for any film in that franchise, "Love and Thunder" being number four.

Now, when we talk about why this potentially wasn't the best Marvel debut, there could be a few reasons why this movie didn't reach those "Dr. Strange" level heights, number one being the reviews. The film has a 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. We know word of mouth is super important for long-term box office potential. That's one of the reasons why we've seen "Maverick" overperform week after week. And Marvel films in general, they typically rely on a huge blockbuster opening to carry them through. The bulk of Marvel films see a steep drop-off in week two, usually more than 60%. So it's super important that they have a really strong showing upfront.

But I think, again, this number is still significant. It's still a big win. We've had an incredibly strong start to the summer blockbuster season, especially after "Minions" last weekend. I've talked to some analysts who said that was really a nice surprise, especially since families have been a little shy to return to theaters at large. And one final fact here, "Thor" and "Minions" represent the first pair of films to open over $100 million domestically on consecutive weekends since June 2018. So this is all around a really good sign for theaters.
