Moderna, Pfizer COVID vaccines for children under 5 approved by the FDA

Yahoo Finance senior health care reporter Anjalee Khemlani details the latest FDA advisory panel votes on Pfizer and Moderna's two-dose COVID vaccine for children.

SEANA SMITH: We have some breaking news on COVID. The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines one step closer toward approval for use in children. Anjalee Khemlani has the details for us. Anj.

ANJALEE KHEMLANI: That's right, Seana. We got Moderna and Pfizer both voted unanimously by an FDA advisory panel today. We saw not so much concern about the Moderna vaccine, which is a two-dose, 25 microgram vaccine, but we did see some comments about Pfizer's dose, which, as we know, is now a three-dose, 3 microgram dose vaccine. And that is some concerns about the efficacy data that came out there.

Pfizer noting that with just two doses, there wasn't really some strong protection. And we heard from one of the panel members, Dr. Paul Offit, noting that this could confuse parents into thinking that their kids are protected after two doses because there is a two-month gap before that third dose. So just to point that out there.

We're sure to hear more about that at the next step, which is, first of all, a decision from the FDA, and then the CDC advisory committee, which is set to meet this weekend and vote on Saturday afternoon, whether or not to advance both of those vaccines for use. We largely do expect those to make it through. And the White House has already made plans to start distribution for next week. So just waiting on those final votes and decisions from both agencies.

Meanwhile, of course, speaking of COVID, we've heard that Dr. Anthony Fauci has tested positive for COVID-19. His symptoms are mild. He is a double boosted individual. Well, that makes him the second official from the administration to test positive. We also know that Health Secretary Xavier Becerra has also tested positive this week. Back to you, guys.
