Nazi map sparks treasure hunt in the Netherlands
STORY: This old Nazi map apparently holds a secret
It is believed to mark the spot where German soldiers hid treasure
worth millions of euros during World War Two
Now, the map has sparked the imagination of amateur treasure hunters in the Netherlands
after it was made public by the Dutch National Archive
(Annet Waalkens, Coordinator at the Dutch National Archive )
"The map neatly shows the area around Amerongen, Elst, Eck, Ommeren and Linden, with a red cross indicating where the treasure is buried. There is even an additional map of the lane, the dirt road where it is buried, the cross is near the third tree."
"According to the documents, it contains bracelets, watches, brooches, necklaces, silver coins, gold coins, precious stones, rubies, diamonds... So really a lot."
The existence of the treasure could never fully be confirmed
but that has not deterred the amateur gold-diggers
(Jan Henzen, Treasure hunter)
"Like so many, I am quite tickled by the news of this treasure. I am a serious searcher, I have been searching in this area for 30 years and I have found nice objects, especially Roman ones. But now suddenly we are told something we haven't known for all these years, that there is probably Nazi treasure buried here. I thought about it overnight and I decided that I would look for it too."
