'Nearly Continuous' Lightning Illuminates Phoenix Night Sky

Lighting illuminated the night sky in Phoenix, Arizona, on Sunday, July 17.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reported 55,667 lightning flashes in Phoenix and the surrounding area on Sunday. Thunderstorms blew through Phoenix late Sunday night, according to the NWS.
