Queensland Woman Bonds With Hissing Rhinoceros Beetle

Many would be perturbed to find a rhinoceros beetle in their home – but not Lisa Van Kula Donovan. The Torbanlea, Queensland, resident wrote on Instagram that she was “Soooooo happy to see one”, and shared this video of her encounter with the bug.

Van Kula Donovan can be seen gently touching the beetle’s shell as it hisses loudly. She explained in the Instagram caption that she was “not hurting it in any way and only very gently touching its back”. She added that “it will still hiss if you only talk to it.”

Amateur etymologist Van Kula Donovan told Storyful that she’s on a mission to show that when handled carefully, insects aren’t so scary. Her Instagram page is proof of that mission, as she can be seen getting hands-on with all manner of insect creatures. Credit: wannabe_entomologist via Storyful
