Trapping wild boars in the Italian capital

The animals have been increasingly drawn to the city attracted by the piles of stinking trash that tumbles out of often unemptied rubbish skips.

"In the city they can be dangerous. There are some diseases that the wild boars carry and can transmit to humans," said park ranger Stefano Casini.

To try to keep control of the boar numbers, local authorities set out cages to trap the animals.

Ever since 2018, about 1,000 boars are trapped in this manner every year. If they are fully grown, the animals are then butchered and sold for meat.

If they are young, they are kept until they are big enough to be butchered.
