Travelers Report 'Empty' Hong Kong Airport Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Hong Kong confirmed nine new cases of the new coronavirus on Wednesday, March 11, including its first case of a person involved in the aviation industry, according to a report from the South China Morning Post.

The city’s coronavirus numbers remained relatively low compared to Mainland China and neighboring countries including Japan and South Korea, with 129 confirmed cases, 3 deaths, and the majority of civil servants returning to work at the beginning of March, according to the Post.

The Hong Kong government announced that it would institute mandatory two week quarantine measures for travelers arriving from Italy and parts of France, Germany, Japan and Spain starting on March 13. The city’s international airport was devoid of its usual crowds, as seen in this footage uploaded on March 11.

“The airport is emptier than my office,” the filmer of this footage wrote when uploading it to Instagram. Credit: @adrieltjokro via Storyful
