Drone Footage Shows Palmyra After Islamic State Retreat

A pro-regime media channel released drone footage on March 27 of the ancient city of Palmyra. State media and the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on March 28 that the Syrian Army had recaptured the ancient city and that Palmyra airport was being used to land military aircraft.

Palmyra was seized by Islamic State in May 2015. Several landmark buildings were destroyed during the occupation, though Maamoun Abdelkarim, Syria’s director of antiquities, reported that the ancient ruins were generally still in good condition. Credit: YouTube/Military Media
