Drug Lord Pablo Escobar's Miami Home Demolished

Crews began to demolish the home once owned by drug lord Pablo Escobar in Miami, Florida, on Tuesday, January 19. But before the wrecking crews arrived, someone stole a safe from the pink mansion, according to local media.

The round safe, hidden under a stairway, was discovered missing by a handyman on January 12, according to the report. A grill and generator were taken in another burglary in October.

Businessman Christian de Berdouare purchased the home at 5860 North Bay Rd. in 2014 for $9.65 million, according to the Miami Herald. He and his wife, journalist Jennifer Valoppi, plan to build a new, modern home on the property. They also had hired treasure hunters to comb the property before the demolition, which will be part of a documentary about Escobar.

Escobar was a Columbian drug lord whose cartel was responsible for 80 percent of the cocaine brought into the United States during his height in the 1980s and 1990s. He bought the Miami beach home in March 1980 for $762,500, the Miami Herald reported. It is unclear if Escobar ever lived at or even visited the house, but officials said it was used as a hideout for his men and used as a point of entry for cocain smuggled into the United States.
