Gustnado Swirls Near Midland, Texas

A gustnado swirled near Midland, Texas, on Tuesday, March 28.

This video shows the weather phenomenon over Briarwood Avenue, near Midland’s Walmart Supercenter.

The gustnado, which is formed by winds swirling on the edge of a thunderstorm, alarmed some Midlands resident who mistook the weather phenomenon for a tornado.

The Midland branch of the National Weather Service had earlier warned that the thunderstorm could bring hail, high winds and rain to the West Texas city. In nearby Odessa, winds whipped up a smaller but dramatic dust devil. No tornadoes were confirmed touching down in Midland, according to NewsWest 9.
