Protesters March on All Chicago Police Districts

Religious groups led protests against police brutality and in support of the FAIR COPS ordinance in marches to each of Chicago’s police districts on Sunday, March 20. The protest, dubbed the Palm Sunday Takeover, included chanting, the reading of names of people killed by police, and die-ins.

The Community Renewal Society, which organized Sunday’s protest, proposed the FAIR COPS ordinance, which calls for police reforms, transparency and accountability. The call for the ordinance comes as the city continues to deal with the fallout of the release of the Laquan McDonald police shooting video and other police-involved shooting images. An organized effort from activists helped defeat Cook County District Attorney Anita Alvarez in the state’s primary last week. Activists also continued to call for Mayor Rahm Emanuel to resign.

Shawn Casselberry, who posted this video, said the reading of the names in this video happened after the protesters were asked to leave the police station. They had been praying and sharing stories of police abuse, he said. Credit: Instagram/Shawn Casselberry
