Sculpture Damaged During Brussels Attack Unveiled as Memorial Near Airport

A number of events were held in Brussels on March 22 to mark the first anniversary of a series of bomb attacks on the city’s metro and airport that left 32 dead and hundreds wounded.

While there was a minute’s silence observed at the city’s Grand Place and at the airport, the city’s metro operator urged a “minute of noise” to coincide with the moment of the metro bombing.

The video shows the unveiling of the Flight in Mind memorial to the attack victims. The sculpture, by Olivier Strebelle, had stood in the departures hall of Brussels airport, and was damaged in the attack.

The work was removed for repairs after the attack, the airport said. That work, however, focused on stabilizing and reinforcing the damaged plinth. The sculpture itself still bears marks from the bomb explosion, and is now on display in a park near the airport. Credit: Twitter/Teri Schultz via Storyful
