Severe Flooding Closes Tahiti International Airport

Heavy flooding hit Tahiti, the largest island in French Polynesia, on Sunday, January 22, prompting many residents to evacuate to higher ground.

Severe weather conditions were reported elsewhere on Tahiti and its neighboring island Moorea. At least three people were injured and more than 100 homes were destroyed, Reuters said, citing the French Polynesia High Commission. More than 6,000 households were without power, while Tahiti’s Fa’a’ā International Airport was closed, local media said. Credit: NTAA Spotters via Storyful
