Thousands of Protesters Gather in Budapest Against Higher Education Bill
Tens of thousands of Hungarians gathered outside parliament buildings in Budapest on April 9 against new laws that could lead to the closure of Budapest’s Central European University (CEU).
Amendments to the Higher Education Act, which were passed in parliament last week, ban non-EU-registered higher education institutions from awarding diplomas. The CEU was founded by Georges Soros in 1991 and is registered in the US. The university’s chairman said he was “determined to remain in Budapest.” Credit: YouTube/Salim Attila via Storyful
