Tsunami Wave Flows Upriver in Iwaki

A small tsunami wave surged up Hiruta River in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Honshu early on Tuesday, November 22.

Multiple aftershocks were reported in the three hours that followed, according to the USGS. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued Tsunami Warnings for Miyagi and Fukushima and Tsunami Advisories for other coastal regions of the country. As of 8 am local time, the tsunami threat had “largely passed” but sea level fluctuations may continue along some coast, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Tokyo Electric Power Company said no abnormalities were found at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear facility was badly damaged in the 2011 tsunami.
