Airline Passengers Cheer as End of Mask Mandate Is Announced

Passengers on a Delta flight cheered after it was announced that masks were now optional following a judge’s decision to overturn the Biden administration’s extended mask mandate for public transit on April 18.

In footage recorded by Elizabeth Nesmith on Monday, passengers can be heard cheering as the cabin crew announce that “masks are now optional.”

US District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle said on Monday that the mask mandate exceeded the statutory authority of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The Transport Security Administration said in a statement following the judges’ publication that it would no longer enforce mask-wearing on public transportation and in transport hubs.

Federal officials had previously said the mandate would be in effect for commercial flights and in other transportation settings, including on buses, ferries, and subways, until at least May 3. Credit: Elizabeth Nesmith via Storyful
