Amid rising fentanyl-related deaths, Narcan nasal spray distributed in Sacramento

One in seven Americans are experiencing a substance use disorder, and over 150 people die every day from synthetic opioid overdoses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In California, those numbers translated to 7,175 opioid-related deaths in 2021 and 5,961 fentanyl-related deaths, data from the California Overdose Surveillance Dashboard show. Public health officials from Sacramento, San Joaquín, and Placer counties told KCRA 3 that locally, those numbers have also spiked in the last two to five years.
