Asteroid That NASA Redirected to Pass Earth This Weekend

Dimorphos, the massive asteroid that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) deliberately crashed a spacecraft into in September 2022, is one of five asteroids due to pass by Earth over the weekend, the space agency said.

NASA’s Asteroid Watch dashboard, which tracks asteroids and comets that will make relatively close approaches to Earth, lists five asteroids that are expected to approach between June 23 and 25. One is the size of a bus, three are comparable in size to planes, and the largest, Dimorphos, is the size of a stadium.

This footage, posted by NASA in September 2022, shows the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) which purposefully impacted on Dimorphos in order to move it. It was the first mission in the world to trial technology that would protect Earth from potential asteroid collisions. Credit: NASA/Johns Hopkins APL via Storyful
