Beehive-Bashing Bear Relocated From Maryland Neighborhood
A young male bear spotted visiting a residential area of Rockville, Maryland, was captured and relocated on Monday morning, May 8, after one homeowner said it had destroyed three beehives on their property, according to local officials.
The Rockville City Police Department (RCPD) said police officers and staff from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) set up a large culvert-shaped trap “filled with donuts, molasses, and vanilla” at the person’s home in Rockville’s College Gardens neighborhood late Sunday afternoon.
During the night, the homeowner called the RCPD and told them the bear was inside the trap. When officers returned, they found the bear “in good condition” and eating the food inside, police said.
Two officers stayed at the scene until morning, when two DNR staff members arrived, loaded the trap onto the back of a flatbed truck, and “safely and successfully” relocated the bear out of Rockville “to an undisclosed location more fitting for his needs,” RCPD said.
