- Which country has the most nuclear weapons? Nuclear weaponry is considered some of the most dangerous technology on Earth. And while they've only been deployed twice in warfare history, approximately 13,400 nuclear weapons are still owned around the world.
The People's Republic of China has the third largest nuclear weapons stockpile-- only approximately 350. China began nuclear weapons testing back in 1964 and continued to 1996. China then ratified the Chemical Weapons Convention, a global arms control treaty in 1997. The country that owns the second largest nuclear weapons collection is the US, with an estimated 5,428. The US was the first to create nuclear weapons and the only country to deploy them-- in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, at the end of World War II.
The Russian nuclear weapons stockpile, estimated at 5,977, is the largest in the world. Russia was the second country to manufacture nuclear weapons by 1949. While Russia's nuclear arms have been significantly reduced the Cold War, President Vladimir Putin has promised to increase Russia's stockpile and withdrew from the New START nuclear arms control treaty with the US in February this year. So now you know.
