Cumbre Vieja Volcano Spews Column of Ash and Gases Over La Palma

The Cumbre Vieja volcano released ash and gases across the Spanish island of La Palma, leading to a suspension of flights on Wednesday, November 3, according to the Canary Islands airline Binter.

This footage released by the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute shows the active lava flow at Camino Aniceto and a large smoke column on Wednesday, they said.

The lava flow grew to 997.9 hectares (about 2,466 acres) by Wednesday after it had destroyed 2,613 buildings, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service. Credit: Canary Islands Volcanology Institute via Storyful
