Diver Finds Tiny Octopus Hiding Out in Beer Bottle

A diver was “extremely lucky” to catch a glimpse of a frilled pygmy octopus in Port Phillip on April 3, when the tiny creature popped out from the bottle it was lurking in to start hunting.

Diver and keen photographer Jules Casey, who lives on the Mornington Peninsula, captured footage of the little guy hiding out in the bottle at Rye.

She said in an Instagram post that its type is rarely seen, but believes it’s because they are often misidentified as “juveniles from other species”.

“This one has a tiny scalloped frill around its mantle distinguishing it from other species,” Casey wrote. “The bottle gives you an indication of just how tiny it is and this one is almost fully grown.”

Casey often posts footage of what she sees below the waves at Port Phillip Bay to her OneBreathDiver Instagram account, where she has over 90,000 followers.
