Egypt hands ex-president Morsi three-year jail sentence for insulting judiciary

A court in Cairo sentenced former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi and 19 others to three years in prison on Saturday after he was found guilty of insulting the judiciary. He was also fined 2 million Egyptian pounds (€93,750). The verdicts can still be appealed. Morsi is already serving a 20-year sentence after being convicted of inciting the killing of protesters during demonstrations in 2012 and a 25-year sentence for spying for Qatar. He is also waiting for a retrial on a separate charge of conspiring to commit terrorist acts, for which he was previously sentenced to death. The death sentence was lifted on appeal. Morsi was democratically elected as president after Egypt's revolution in 2011. But the Muslim Brotherhood leader's time in power proved divisive and he was overthrown two years later by Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.
