'Elvis' dethrones 'Top Gun: Maverick' for top spot at the box office

Yahoo Finance's Allie Canal reports on the success of the new Elvis biopic, along with rumors of Johnny Depp not appearing as Jack Sparrow in further 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films.

DAVE BRIGGS: Allie, will he or won't he? Captain Jack could be back. Johnny Depp, will he actually take on the role?

ALEXANDRA CANAL: OK, I wanted to preface that this is unconfirmed. I did reach out to Disney for comment. They did not get back to me on this. But a representative for the actor did tell NBC News, quote, "This is made-up." So it's not looking too good for any "Pirates of the Caribbean" fans out there.

But if we're talking about successful 59-year-old actors and equally successful sequels, let's talk Tom Cruise and "Top Gun, Maverick," because you mentioned right into the break, "Top Gun, Maverick" just hit $1 billion globally, the first Tom Cruise film to do so. He set out a pretty heartfelt tweet, thanking fans. He wrote, quote, "To all the films in release, to all the studios, and to all the exhibitors, congratulations. To the audience, thank you for venturing out and allowing us to entertain you. See you at the movies."

Oh! It made my hair stand on my arms. It was amazing. An analyst that I've spoke with said it's pretty unheard of to see a film like "Top Gun" continue to post these numbers week after week. Five weeks after the debut, it was competing with "Elvis" for the number one spot this weekend. "Elvis" edged out just slightly. But "Top Gun," I think it's going to be one of those most successful movies this summer. I watched it. I thought it was absolutely amazing. I think I'm going to go again because I laughed, I cried, all the things. So I'm very proud of "Top Gun, Maverick."

DAVE BRIGGS: Did you see "Elvis," though?

ALEXANDRA CANAL: I didn't see "Elvis" yet, but that is high on my list as well. It's gotten pretty good reviews. So I have high expectations for that one, too.

DAVE BRIGGS: Yeah, I'm told it's a little long, but excellent. Some family members saw it and really enjoyed it. Can't wait to see that one. Allie Canal, thanks so much. Appreciate that. Good to see you. Summer movies you're looking forward to seeing or?

SEANA SMITH: You know, I'm the wrong person to ask. And you know that. You know that about me.

DAVE BRIGGS: I don't think you've ever seen a movie in 20 years.

SEANA SMITH: I haven't been to the movie theater-- I know. I haven't been in the movie theater since pre-pandemic. I have to say, though, there's been so much press about "Top Gun," so many people, including Allie, giving it raving reviews.

DAVE BRIGGS: It's terrific.

SEANA SMITH: And you guys have sold me. I'm going to go. It's just a matter of when.

DAVE BRIGGS: You're running out of time.

SEANA SMITH: I know, I know.

DAVE BRIGGS: You've got to see it in theaters. Rachelle, have you seen "Top Gun"?

RACHELLE AKUFFO: I have not. And I will say, that's one I probably will go to the movies and see. I've been quite lazy so far this summer. I just now saw the "Spider-Man, No Way Home." I just finished watching "Doctor Strange--" you know, "--and the Multiverse of Madness." Because I just want to sit down. I'm not-- I wasn't ready to go into the movies. If I'm going to go, it has to be for something amazing. So it sounds like "Top Gun" might be that one.

SEANA SMITH: What you, real quick?

DAVE BRIGGS: It's terrific. I saw it. I loved it. "Thor" is the movie I will return to the theaters for.

SEANA SMITH: Ah. When does that come out?

DAVE BRIGGS: That's coming out in a couple of weeks. And that looks great. I love me some Hemsworth.

SEANA SMITH: All right. I don't know if I'm going to go to the theaters for that one. Let's just focus on "Top Gun" first.
