Famous Moroccan donkeys have free shelter in Fez
Neglected donkeys are safe
in this shelter
Location: Fez, Morocco
This ancient city relies
on donkeys for transportation
Sometimes they're abandoned
ARCHITECT WHO HELPED BUILD A NEW SHELTER FOR DONKEYS AND MULES IN FEZ, MARYAM GHANDI, SAYING:
"This stable is for donkeys and mules that work inside the ancient city of Fez. The streets and alleys of the city are very narrow, so donkeys and mules transport goods from the last point that cars can reach to shops and houses in Fez.”
Donkeys often spend nights in open air,
vulnerable to weather conditions
They can also be difficult to
handle when old or sick
DONKEY OWNER, ABDELQADER JIBELO, SAYING:
"I bought this donkey 12 years ago. It has grown old and tired but we are patient with it. I do not have the money to change it for another one. It is now more than 21 years old. They help us and treat the animal if it gets ill, and carry it if it cannot walk. May God reward them well. This is what I can say."
Around 100 donkeys and mules work in Fez
The shelter holds 30, but
hopes to expand to 50 soon
