TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te defended Taiwan's sovereignty and military preparedness in a press conference on Wednesday, marking his first month in office.

Responding to criticism from Hsiao Hsu-tsen, director of the Ma Ying-jeou Culture and Education Foundation, Lai reiterated that the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China are separate entities.

Speaking earlier at the Whampoa Military Academy's centennial, he had criticized defeatist military doctrines, prompting Hsiao to accuse him of warmongering.

Lai stressed that true peace comes from strength, not empty rhetoric, and affirmed his commitment to defending Taiwan's sovereignty and democratic constitution.

The event, titled "Trust in New Politics, a New Taiwan Era," also featured Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, addressing further media queries.
