'No Safe Place in America': Texas State Rep Makes Emotional Plea for Gun Reform in Texas

Texas state legislators voted to advance a bill that would raise the legal age to buy assault rifle-style weapons from age 18 to 21 on Monday, May 8.

The vote came after eight people, including children, were killed in a mass shooting at an outlet mall in Allen on Saturday.

Texas State Rep. Gene Wu, a Democrat, made an emotional plea for increased gun control during a press conference.

Holding back tears, Wu said: “I cry because every time I see that f****** video, I see those pictures, I see my son.”

“There is no safe place in America anymore. There is no church that’s safe. There is no school that’s safe. There is no shopping mall that’s safe. There is no library that’s safe,” Wu said.

Monday was the last day the Texas legislature could vote on HB 2744, which passed with a vote of 8-5. It will be scheduled for a vote on the floor of the House of Representatives next.

GENE WU: The people who are responsible send their thoughts and prayers to God. And God has sent them. And no one is listening to the people that God sent.

You have prayed for an answer. You have begged for a solution. The solution is standing right here. Your answer is looking you in the face. I cry because every time I see that fucking video to see those pictures, I see my son.

There is no safe place in America anymore. There is no church that's safe. There is no school that's safe. There's no shopping mall that's safe. There's no library that's safe.

Not because of books, not because of trans kids who want health care, but because of things that people own. Because we value things over people. And I don't know what to do anymore. At some point, the people blocking the laws that could help prevent these type of tragedies-- at some point, they take some ownership of these tragedies. No more, please.
