Taiwan to launch TPASS 2.0 for cheaper public transport

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) announced on Thursday (June 13) plans to launch the TPASS 2.0 scheme by the end of the year, aiming to make public transportation more affordable and accessible for non-commuters and frequent users.

This announcement came during theMinister of Transportation and Communications Li Meng-yen's first report to the Legislative Yuan's Transportation Committee since taking office nearly a month ago.

Li also revealed an expanded national highway bus discount program after the Lunar New Year holiday in January 2025. The program offers a 40% discount and free transfers.

He emphasized the government's commitment to upgrading the public transportation system by gradually replacing bus fare collection systems with mobile payment verification devices by 2026 for highway buses and by 2030 for city buses.

In his report, Li set ambitious targets for public transportation, aiming to increase its market share to 16% by the end of the year, 18% by 2026, and 20% by 2028.

These goals are part of a broader strategy to improve the fare structure and subsidy mechanisms. Despite facing questions about Far EasTone Telecommunications and cross-strait travel bans, Li did not comment before the meeting, stating he would respond during the session.

Li's initiatives reflect a significant push toward enhancing Taiwan's public transportation infrastructure and accessibility, marking a pivotal step in the government's efforts to promote sustainable and efficient urban mobility.
