Tourist spending in Spain sees strong rebound

STORY: Sun, sea and restriction-free travel are luring tourists back to Spain.

The number of foreign visitors in August jumped by 70% from the same month last year.

But the total remained way below the over 10 million tourists who visited in August 2019.

However, their spending approached the levels of that year.

As a result of higher prices, tourists spent $11.1 billion.

That’s not far off the $11.5 billion in August 2019.

Ministers said the higher spending was due to moves to strengthen the quality of the country's tourism industry.

Spain’s economy is dependent on travelers.

It recorded one of the deepest economic contractions in 2020, due to the global health crisis.
