Egypt Marks Opening of New Suez Canal

The Egyptian government released a documentary on Thursday, August 6, to mark the completion of a major extension to the Suez Canal. The film, shown at the opening ceremony inaugurating the “New Suez Canal,” features sweeping aerial footage showing excavation and dredging, as well as celebrating Egyptians.

“The world said the new Suez Canal would take three years… so we challenged time,” the documentary begins.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ordered the project to be completed in one year instead of three. This is underlined at the end of the video, with scenes of Egyptians standing in front of pyramids, holding up one finger and exclaiming: “We did it in one year.” Credit: YouTube/New Canal Suez
