Ghana President Visits Deadly Gas Station Explosion Site in Accra
Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama visited the site of a deadly explosion at a gas station in Accra on Thursday, June 6, after scores of people were killed overnight when floodwaters swept stored fuel into a nearby fire. Many people were sheltering at the station amid a downpour when the blaze broke out. Reports citing the local fire service put the death toll at more than 90.
“This loss of life is catastrophic, almost unprecedented,” Mahama said, emphasizing it was necessary to move houses off of waterways to prevent a similar disaster from occurring in the future. “Year in, year out, this continues to happen. Until we attack it scientifically and strategically we will continue to have this problem.” Credit: Viasat 1 Ghana
